🔥🔥🔥 Zcash has successfully patched a critical vulnerability in the Orchard shielded pool. The flaw could have allowed the creation of unlimited counterfeit $ZEC without detection and existed from May 2022 until early June 2026. Security researcher Taylor Hornby discovered the vulnerability on May 29, 2026, while conducting an audit for Shielded Labs using the AI model Claude Opus 4.8. The Zcash Open Development Lab team and partners responded immediately, deploying a soft fork on June 2 to temporarily disable Orchard transactions, followed by the NU6.2 hard fork on June 3 at block 3,364,600 to fully resolve the issue. Due to Orchard's privacy-preserving design, there is currently no cryptographic way to determine whether the vulnerability had been exploited in the past. However, according to Zooko Wilcox, the likelihood of prior exploitation is low because the bug went unnoticed for years and was ultimately discovered by a leading security expert using advanced AI-assisted auditing tools. Following the news, the price of $ZEC dropped sharply. Zcash has stated that it plans additional upgrades to strengthen supply verification and improve the network's ability to detect similar issues in the future.
